Chapter 13

A TERRIBLE quiet descended on the school. The only sound was that of the wind as it whipped past the turrets at the very top of the towers. Rattles and whistles, banging and knocking continued on into the darkness. With each passing hour, the gales became more violent.

Oberon sat in the warm comfort of his room. Letters, notes, and annotations covered his lap and the surrounding bed. Every expression of emotion he’d gotten from Hazrael while they were together was spread out around him. Poetry in rhyming couplets illustrated in flowery imagery Hazrael’s love for Oberon.

Words floated off the vellum, morphing into rosebuds that bloomed. Oberon had forgotten about the animated aspect of Hazrael’s writings. In those months after Hazrael’s disappearance, he’d gone to his room—one he’d shared with Hazrael—and read the papers over and over again, committing each word, letter, and flourish to memory. As if somehow the life in the characters would bring Hazrael back. It never had. Years had gone by; the letters lay in the bottom of a drawer drawing dust and mites. All the while Hazrael had been tormented by the necromancers, living through unspeakable acts of cruelty, and Oberon, Nico, and the rest of Hazrael’s friends had been none the wiser. All those who had loved him had let him down. They should have found other means to locate their missing brother.

Now, all these years later, Hazrael turned to Theodyne for comfort. And why not? Theodyne hadn’t been here when Hazrael went missing. Hadn’t let him down by not finding him soon enough.

The wind howled like a tortured soul seeking revenge. Windows rattled and shook in their casements. Rage from the air elementals disrupted the natural flow of the school’s energies. They were seriously displeased.

Oberon set the letters aside and walked to the window to look out. A horrible storm had rolled in, hovering over the school, a vengeful weather system with the power to kill.

A chill ran down his spine as he gazed at the black night. Lightning cut through the clouds, illuminating images scrolling in the swirling, angry mass. He’d seen formations like those before—on the road to meet Theodyne and Jolen.

Fingers pointed in accusation at something above Oberon. He opened the window and leaned out but saw nothing in the darkness. Rain pelted his face. Lightning flashed. A lone figure stood on the battlements, raging against the storm.

Long white hair whipped in the wind. Clenched fists were raised in anger.

What in the name of the elements was Hazrael doing?

Oberon ran from his room and hurried up to the roof. That stupid, crazed maniac was going to get himself killed and the rest of the school along with him.

He reached the roof door and jiggled the handle. Locked. Of course. He’d not want anyone to witness this certain suicide. Whatever he’d seen in that vision earlier had rattled him completely. Oberon could only imagine the worst.

Quickly, he said an incantation to release the levers. It didn’t work. The lock clicked closed again.
